Today my daughter and I took advantage of our school/work fall vacation time to have a leisurely day out, and we started with lunch at El Guapo’s Cantina in downtown Tulsa.

When you walk into El Guapo’s, you’re transported to a fun & festive atmosphere, with piñata-decorated high ceilings and plenty wall decor. The medium-low light also sets a cozy tone for the meal, and this combination of festive decor and cozy lighting always makes it a happy dining experience for me.
We’re both queso lovers so we started with the Cantina Queso, which had a nice, thick consistency and a smooth, basic white queso flavor. It’s a nice mild queso that serves its purpose just fine, no frills or spicy kicks here. The salsa, on the other hand, is full of fresh flavors and has a nice amount of spice.

My daughter ordered the cheese enchiladas for lunch and got standard cheese enchiladas, much like the queso, no surprises here, just delicious cheesiness.
My lunch order was by far my favorite taste of the day: Chicken Tortilla Soup. The broth was dark, rich, and full of flavors, and delivered a nice kick, too. It had delicious shredded, juicy chicken, crispy thin tortilla strips, the perfect amount of veggies cooked in, and was topped with a cool dallop of sour cream. Add a squirt of lime and you have magnificence! This was the perfect thing for this cool autumn day.

They also had some awesome Halloween piñatas to enjoy!

The prices were affordable, the atmosphere was great, and the food was really good. You can try them at their original location downtown, in the heart of Tulsa’s Blue Dome District at the corner of 1st and Elgin, or check out their new location at 81st & Harvard.
